“Your child is stronger than you think,” shares Ciro’s mother. This resilience, often surprising adults, is a common theme among families at Compass to Care.

Ciro, a one-year-old from Texas, is battling medulloblastoma, a primary brain cancer found in children. Despite the daunting challenges of treatment—including frequent needle pokes, harsh medications, and prolonged hospital stays—Ciro’s spirit remains indomitable. Everyone who has the pleasure of spending time with Ciro in treatment will tell you he fills the hospital rooms with laughter and creativity, often transforming them into playful forts.

The family, which includes Ciro’s parents and his elder brother Atom, age five, share a love of travel and exploration. One of their favorite things to do is experience new adventures outside of their city. This passion keeps their spirits high and strengthens their bond, especially during the most challenging circumstances.

While traveling is usually their favorite activity, the journeys to Ciro’s cancer treatments are understandably often filled with anxiety. Compass to Care, thanks to the generosity of our donors, has had the honor of supporting the family by providing gas for 28 such trips, alleviating one stressor during this already stressful period.

As the family prepares for each hospital visit, Ciro never fails to instill a sense of adventure into the travel. Each trip becomes more than a mere commute; they are treasured moments for the family to continuously strengthen their bond. While this routine was born from necessity, the journeys have blossomed into precious adventures, brightening a difficult chapter with warmth and closeness in one vehicle.
