Spunk and Strength vs. Brain Cancer

Staying positive no matter what!

Throughout his fight against brain cancer at the University of Iowa Children’s Hospital, Knox has never lost his characteristic strength and spunk that mom, Tiffany, loves about her son. This is an even more amazing fact when one thinks about how much Knox has already been through in his young life. At just 4 years old, Knox was diagnosed with brain cancer, and began a regimen of radiation treatment to fight his disease. The night before his last birthday, he began to lose his hair. Tiffany vividly remembers how she was brought to tears that night when she noticed this change.

While the fight against his tumor rages on, Knox, Tiffany, and the rest of their family have not been able to rest. Every single appointment at the hospital means almost four hours on the road, no matter how early or late their arrival time is. This doesn’t include the emergency trips, for times when Knox has a fever, and everyone has to drop whatever they’re doing to get him to care.

The exhaustion from the constant travel makes it challenging for Tiffany to find ways to stay positive. But she knows as his mom, she has to dig deep for Knox’s sake. With Compass to Care’s gas and lodging assistance program, she has been able to focus more of her attention on supporting Knox, and the rest of her family through a difficult time.

“We were in a very tough spot financially,” Tiffany recalled, “trying to make ends meet, paying for hotel, fuel, food, mortgage, bills the cost is never ending. It has helped make it more feasible to travel back and forth safely. Not to mention to see our other children when possible throughout our journey.”

For other parents going through the same thing, she has this advice to share: “Try to just live hour by hour, day by day. Embrace the small victories and smiles when you can!”
